Although travel can open the world for you in so many ways, there will always be uncomfortable situations or challenges when you take time to visit other places. One of these challenges can be with your skin! Have you ever returned from an amazing trip and struggled to get your skin back to equilibrium? Have you ever gone somewhere new, and realized your skincare routine didn’t work in this new environment the same way it does at home?
As your personal travel advisor, I am here to help with all aspects of travel! So I have partnered with Angie Barba from In The Nude Skincare for tips and tricks on how to care for your skin whether you’re sightseeing and enjoying a vacation, or rushing around going to meetings on a business trip. Read through to the end of the article for a special offer!
Here are some common issues our skin has while traveling and some great solutions!
Dehydration
Whether you’re visiting a dryer climate than you are used to, or flying on a long-distance flight, you’re very likely to notice that your skin is more dry when you’re traveling. Angie recommends packing a little hydration kit for your skin in your carry-on when you’re flying, as well as extra hydration masks for when you reach your destination.
Solutions:
Use under-eye gel masks while sleeping on the plane.
Spray your face with hydrating mist anytime your face feels dry.
Don’t forget your lips and hands! Bring extra lip balms and hand lotions.
Make it fun! Give yourself a mini spa treatment when you reach your hotel with full-face recovery masks!
2. Sun exposure
First and foremost, sun protection is the most important tool when it comes to caring for the health and longevity of your skin. It needs to be reapplied every few hours, even if you aren’t out swimming or sweating. Angie vehemently recommends Colorescience SPF because it is a mineral-based sunscreen without chemical additives, and it protects against UVA/UVB, pollution, blue light, and infrared radiation. It even comes in an easy mineral powder with brush for easy re-application!
Solutions:
Get into the habit of applying and re-applying SPF regularly.
Mineral-based powders make for easy re-application.
Hot, humid climates
For those who are prone to sweat, especially in hotter and more humid climates, there are a number of tools and tricks you can use to keep yourself looking and feeling fresh. Layering your skincare correctly (serum, moisturizer, makeup, powder) can prevent you from sweating off your products in a hot environment, and using a setting powder right before you head out can help as well.
Solution:
Mattifiying powder for face AND body, especially sweat-prone areas.
Oil-absorbing facial sheets and anti-chafing balm.
For those who are acne-prone, bring and use an FDA and dermatologist-recommended red and blue light LED mask to use in the hotel after a long day.
Stress, change in routine
It can be difficult while you’re on a trip to keep up with all your skincare, health, exercise, hydration, and diet routines, and this change in routine can trigger challenges in caring for your skin. For this reason, Angie recommends stopping all actives such as retinols while on your trip and focusing on protecting your skin above all. Also, if at all possible, do not switch products while you are gone, as that can throw off the balance of your skin even more than any of the other changes in routine.
Solution:
If you travel often, use products that come in travel sizes.
Or pack your regular skincare products into travel sized bottles.
Get a personal skincare consultation from In The Nude Skincare to find the best products for you and your skin.
Plan to get a facial from your favorite licensed esthetician to remove toxins and pollutants and re-set your skin when you return from your trip.
